Joyn vs Discord

Your club isn't a server

Discord is free, fast and endlessly customizable, and for communities that hang out online it's hard to beat - this page won't pretend otherwise. But if you run a club, a choir or a team that meets in person, you've probably noticed it was built for a different kind of community. That's the gap Joyn was built for.

The short version

Keep Discord if your community lives online: voice hangouts, streams, bots and a crowd that already has the app. Move to Joyn when the community meets in real life - events you need real answers to, members who would never install Discord, and the to-dos and files behind every gathering. Below is the honest breakdown, including where Discord wins.

01

β€œ14 interested - who's coming?”

Discord has scheduled events, and they're good at one thing: telling people something is about to start. For a club, the question that matters comes days earlier.

On a Discord server

Members can mark an event as β€œInterested”, and that's the only answer there is. Nobody can say no, so silence and β€œnot coming” look the same, and you can't cap the numbers or keep a waitlist. The headcount for the minibus still comes down to a thread of replies.

In Joyn

Events take a real going or not going, with an attendee list you can trust, reminders that go out on their own, and an optional capacity with a waitlist that lets people in as spots free up. Need dietary needs or T-shirt sizes? Ask sign-up questions right on the event.

02

β€œOur treasurer won't install Discord”

A club is everyone: the parents of the U12s, the retired treasurer, the new member who joined last week. Your tool has to work for the least techy of them.

On a Discord server

Everyone needs a Discord account, a username and a feel for a gaming-first app full of servers, channels and notification settings. For the members who already live on Discord that's nothing. For the rest it's a reason to quietly stop showing up.

In Joyn

Members join with an invite link and land on the community's events, groups and files - in the browser or the iOS and Android apps. It's laid out around the club's events and groups, so the treasurer finds the AGM without a tutorial.

03

β€œWhich channel was that in?”

Many growing Discord servers end up with the same sidebar: forty channels, a dozen categories, and roles that decide who sees which.

On a Discord server

Teams, committees and interest groups become private channels plus a role, wired up one permission at a time. It works - Discord's permissions are powerful - but every new team is another round in the role settings, and members scroll a sidebar built for the whole server.

In Joyn

Groups give every team and committee a home of its own, with channels, events, to-dos, boards, files and admins of its own. Members see the groups they belong to, and setting up a new one takes a name and a few invites.

04

β€œWho's bringing the cake?”

Behind every match, concert or meetup there's a list of jobs, and a pile of documents people need again next season.

On a Discord server

Discord is a conversation tool: to-dos live in pinned messages or a bot you have to set up, and files are attachments in the chat, findable through search if you remember roughly when they were posted.

In Joyn

To-dos with assignees and due dates, boards you move cards across, recurring check-ins and an organized file library are built into every group, next to the conversation and the events they belong to.

Side by side

Discord wins on voice and video, bots and sheer scale - see the section below. Where both columns check the box, the detail shows what each is built for.

Stick with Discord if…

βœ“

Your community mostly meets online, in voice channels and streams

βœ“

Your members already use Discord every day

βœ“

You rely on bots for games, moderation or custom workflows

βœ“

You run a big open community of thousands of strangers

Discord is excellent software for online hangouts. Joyn earns its place when your community meets in person and coordination - not conversation - is the hard part.

Common questions

Is Discord free for clubs?

+

Yes. Servers, channels, voice and events cost nothing; Nitro is an optional subscription each member can buy for perks like bigger uploads. Joyn is free for your first 100 members, then either €4 per person or one flat price with unlimited members.

Does Joyn have voice or video calls?

+

No, and we'd rather say so up front. If your community spends evenings in voice channels, Discord is better at that. Clubs that meet in person usually need a call now and then, and keep using Zoom, Meet or Teams for it.

Can we use Joyn and Discord together?

+

Yes. You can keep Discord for the online hangouts and run events, groups, to-dos and files on Joyn, where the members who never opened Discord can follow along too.

Do members need to download an app?

+

No. Joyn runs fully in the browser, and there are native iOS and Android apps for members who prefer them.

How do we move our club over from Discord?

+

Create your community, set up a group for each team or committee, and post a single invite link in your server. Message history doesn't come along, so it helps to run both for a few weeks while the events move over.
