Joyn vs Spond

Not every club is a team

Spond is free, millions of players and parents already have it, and for a sports team that trains twice a week it's very good - this page won't pretend otherwise. But choirs, churches, associations and clubs with a board and five committees need more than attendance. That's the job Joyn was built for.

The short version

Keep Spond if you're a sports team or club built around training attendance, you collect fees through the app, or parents answer for their kids - it does all three well and costs nothing until money moves. Move to Joyn when your club is a community: groups that talk every day, to-dos, boards and documents next to the conversation, and events that show up on your own website. Below is the honest breakdown, including where Spond wins.

01

β€œAre we a team?”

Spond is organized the way sports clubs are: groups of players, sessions to attend, a coach who wants to know who's coming. If that's your club, it fits like a glove.

In Spond

A choir, a parish or a residents' association gets the same shape: every activity is an event, every group a squad. It works, but the board, the newsletter team and the summer party committee all end up as rosters waiting for the next session.

In Joyn

A space holds your whole community, and groups give every team, committee or section a home of its own - channels, events, to-dos, files and admins. The rehearsal schedule and the board's budget discussion each get the shape they need.

02

β€œWhere do we talk about it?”

Spond's chat is there to support the events: confirm the time, share the kit list, ask the coach. For a community, the conversation is half the point.

In Spond

There are one-to-one and group chats, with group chats capped at 100 people, plus posts for news. Fine for β€œbring your shin pads”. Less fine for a club of 300 that wants a channel per topic, room for everyone in the same conversation and a place for the banter.

In Joyn

Every group gets channels by topic - announcements only the people you choose can post in, a chat for everyone, a channel per project - with threads, polls and mentions, and the whole club can be in the same channel.

03

β€œWho's bringing the cake?”

Behind every match, concert or AGM there's a list of jobs and a folder of documents someone will need again next season.

In Spond

Spond can hand out tasks on an event - who drives, who brings oranges - and store files. The ongoing work that isn't tied to one date, like the grant application or the new kit order, has nowhere obvious to live.

In Joyn

To-dos with assignees and due dates, boards you move cards across, recurring check-ins and pages for the handbook live in every group, next to the conversation. The file library keeps the minutes and the bylaws where a new board member finds them.

04

β€œOur website already exists”

Most clubs have a website and a membership system already. The question is whether your community tool works with them or asks you to start over.

In Spond

Spond offers its own club website as a paid add-on (around €15 a month in the eurozone), and its deeper club admin, Spond Club, isn't offered in every country - Denmark included.

In Joyn

Put your events and news on the website you already have - including a Klubmodul or Conventus site - without writing anything twice. Fees and the member register stay in your membership system; Joyn is where members find out what's happening.

Side by side

Spond wins on payments, parent accounts and price for a club that doesn't need more than events and chat - see the section below. Where both columns check the box, the detail shows what each is built for.

Spond is genuinely good at what it was built for, and plenty of clubs should stay. Joyn earns its place when your club is a community with committees, conversations and work that doesn't fit into a training session.

Common questions

Is Spond free?

+

Yes. Spond doesn't charge for the app; it earns a fee when you collect payments through it, around 2.5% plus a small fixed amount per payment, and sells a club website as an add-on. Joyn is free for your first 100 members, then either €4 per person or one flat price with unlimited members.

Does Joyn handle payments and membership fees?

+

No. Joyn is where your members talk, plan and find events - fees and the member register stay in your membership system. Joyn works next to systems like Klubmodul and Conventus and can show your events and news on their club websites.

Can parents answer for their children in Joyn?

+

Not today - every member, including a parent, joins with their own account. If your club is mostly youth teams where parents answer for their kids, Spond's guardian accounts are the better fit.

Can we use Joyn and Spond together?

+

Yes. You can keep Spond for the sports teams' training and payments and run the board, committees, volunteers and club-wide news on Joyn.

How do we move our club over from Spond?

+

Create your community, set up a group for each team or committee, and share a single invite link with your members. You can move one group at a time, starting with the ones Spond fits least.
