Getting started with Joyn

Joyn is built around spaces. A space is one community - a club, a church, a school class, a team - and everything that community does lives inside it: channels, groups, events, files and people. Most people belong to one space, but you can be in several.

This guide takes you from a blank account to a space with a channel, a group and your first members in it.

1. Create your account

1. Go to getjoyn.io/signup.
2. Enter your Name, Email and a Password of at least 8 characters.
3. Check your inbox for the verification code and enter it when asked.

If someone already sent you an invitation, open that link instead. It signs you in or creates your account, then drops you straight into the space. See Join a space with an invitation.

2. Create a space

1. Click Create a space on the welcome screen, or pick it from the space list later.
2. Give it a Name and an optional Description. Both can be changed later.
3. Add a cover and a picture if you have them. They show on the space front page.

You start on the Free plan, which needs no card. Plans belong to the space, not to you: everyone you invite gets the same features and never pays anything themselves. See Plans and billing for the limits.

3. Find your way around

The space sidebar has four areas:

• Channels - where the whole space talks. Chat, announcements, polls, to-do lists and boards all live here.
• Groups - smaller circles inside the space, each with its own channels, events and files. Think teams, committees or age groups.
• Events - everything that is happening, with RSVPs.
• Files - shared files, folders and pages.

The people in your space are under People, and the space's own settings are under Settings.

4. Add your first channel

1. Open Channels and click New channel.
2. Give it a Channel name and pick a Channel type. Start with Chat for general conversation or Announcements for one-way updates.
3. Click Create.

The Free plan includes 3 channels, so pick the ones that matter most. See Channel types explained for what each type is for.

5. Add a group

1. Open Groups and click New group.
2. Type a Group name and create it.
3. Open the group and add people to it. Group members get the group's channels, events and files; nobody else sees them.

6. Invite people

1. Open People and click Invite to space.
2. Either copy your invite code and share it in your existing chat, or enter an email under Or invite by email.

Everyone who joins is a member. What members can do is set under Settings and Permissions. See Invite people to your space and Roles and permissions.
